As someone fortunate enough to retire early, I wanted to take advantage of the lower tax rates associated with early retirement to move money from my IRA to my Roth IRA (a Roth conversion). I couldn’t find any tools or financial advisors that could articulate the tradeoffs with the level of detail that I was looking for. For example, the optimal amount for a Roth conversion is very different for an 8% return than a 12% return. And, starting with $1M in your IRA is very different than if you have $5M in your IRA. The cost of making the wrong decisions can result in the loss of millions of dollars over time. The complexities of interest rates, inflation, RMDs, IRMAA, NIIT, Social Security payments, investment returns, Federal taxes and State taxes make it impossible to have a one-size-fits-all approach. This tool takes all of those factors into account. It will clearly show the impact to your net worth over time and help you determine exactly what the optimal strategy is.
